Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez, believes Lionel Messi would return to the Argentina national team despite the Barcelona star’s decision to call it quits after the COPA America.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Tenfield in Uruguay, Suárez tried to keep Messi’s fans at ease, stating that he will make a comeback with La Albiceleste despite their most recent disappointment.
“It would be a shame for football if he takes this decision, but I’m sure he will reconsider and change his mind. Knowing Leo, I’m sure he said it in a moment of sadness and helplessness. It is a difficult time. Everyone has the right to make their decisions and all are respectable,” Suárez stated.
Messi lost his third Copa América final with Argentina last Sunday, when La Albiceleste wasn’t able to beat Chile for the second year in a row.
Messi revealed his intention to say good-bye to the Argentinean squad shortly after losing the Copa América final, provoking numerous reactions around the world. Even Argentina’s president Mauricio Macri and legendary player Diego Maradona have asked him to re-consider.
Later in the interview, Suárez indicated that Messi’s place among the greatest players of all time is already secure, even if he chooses not to return with La Albiceleste.
“It doesn’t matter what people say, he’s one of the best in the history of football and that won’t change,” Suárez added.
The Uruguayan striker wasn’t able to play a single game with his National Team this summer due to an untimely injury he picked up during the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla.
