SUDAN: Army reveals President Bashir has been relieved of his duties, as protests continue

Events unfolded on Thursday as army tanks flooded the streets of Khartoum while the fate of President Omar al-Bashir remained unclear with military and government sources saying that the leader had stepped down.

According to reports, the Sudanese army is expected to make an important announcement after months of protests against Bashir.

The clamour to step down erupted in December when demonstrations broke out over a rise in bread prices. They have grown to become the biggest challenge yet to Bashir’s 30-year rule.

It was gathered that crowds of demonstrators have spent five nights thronging the sprawling complex, outside the military’s headquarters, singing and dancing to revolutionary songs.

Protesters at the sit-in told Al Jazeera they feel their calls have been heard.

“We finally win this battle, we struggled a lot and we suffered a lot but everything supposed to have an end,” 45-year-old tea seller Fathia Imam said happily.
