A suicide bomber in the early hours of Wednesday blew himself up at a mosque in Umurari village on the outskirts of Maiduguri, killing at least 22 people.

He was said to have detonated a suicide belt at the prayer ground during the early morning prayers, killing many in the process and injuring many others.

Reports quote an emergency services worker s saying the loud explosion from the suicide mission rocked the local Mosque shortly after prayers began in an area known to be Boko Haram stronghold some five kilometers from the state capital.

Meanwhile President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attack, describing the insurgents as godless.

The President’s message, posted online said: “I am dismayed by the news of a bomb attack on innocent worshippers in a mosque in Maiduguri this morning.

“This attack is yet another sign that Boko Haram is a mindless and godless group that in no way represents true Islam.

“I sympathize with all who lost family and loved ones in the attack, and with the government and people of Borno State.

“Nigerians should please not let down their guard. Vigilance should continue to be a priority, especially in public places.

“The Government remains resolute in its commitment to securing Nigeria from terrorism and violence”, he said.
