EXPLOSION

Two people were killed while about 24 others were injured when a bomb went off outside the Borno State Secretariat, Maiduguri, on Thursday.

According to eyewitness accounts, the bomb explosion came from a tricycle that was passing in front of the secretariat, fueling the belief that the explosive device was not meant for the government building.

A spokesman at the Borno State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, confirmed to AFP that “we
have two dead bodies at the hospital and 24 injured”.

The blast occurred at about 12pm.

An eye witness, who does not want to be named, however said it is not clear how many people were in the tricycle, insisting that the explosion was accidental.

“The tricycle was heading to another destination. The explosives went off prematurely”, he said.

A vegetable trader outside the secretariat also said: “I was attending to my customers when I heard a loud explosion and instantly I knew it was an attack.

“I took cover. Moments later I realised the explosion was from a tricycle which blew up just metres away from the gate of the secretariat.

“It went up in flames and there was nothing but charred remains of the tricycle.”
