Sultan urges FG to deal with herdsmen carrying arms

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described killer herdsmen who go about with weapons as criminals, and challenged the Federal Government to investigate their sources of weapons as well as ensure they face the full wrath of the law as criminals.

The Sultan stated this in Sokoto on Sunday in his Eid-el-Fitr message to Muslims faithful in Nigeria, insisting that ‘‘the real herdsmen do not carry guns, but they only move with their cows and sticks.”

He went further to say, ‘‘Agreed, there are bad eggs among the Fulani, but those carrying arms and perpetrating heinous killings are not herdsmen. Those carrying arms are criminals and they should be treated as such.

‘‘The government should therefore probe the sources of these weapons and take appropriate action; they should face the wrath of the law. Government should probe the sources of these weapons and take appropriate action so as to minimise these attacks.”

While the Sultan also commended the Federal Government for steps it has taken to curtail insurgency in the North-East, he however encouraged them not to stop combating the terrorists because “the problem is not yet over.”

According to him, there is need for Nigerians to complement the efforts of the security agencies in the fight against insurgency because, “The issue of security is a collective responsibility and not that of the security agencies alone,” he added.
