SUMMON: I need explanations, your letter is confusing, Fani-Kayode tells IGP

Nigeria former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has written the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, in reply to an earlier letter inviting him for interview over allegation of inciting comments.

In the letter dated August 27, signed by the former minister’s lawyers, Raphael Oyewale, and Idunnu Ajina and addressed to the office of the IGP, Fani-Kayode said that the police invitation letter was confusing.

He therefore demanded for detailed information on his alleged offence, as well as pleaded for an extension of date for him to appear before the police for questioning.

In a letter dated August 20 and signed by an officer, Habu Sani, the commissioner of the IGP’s monitoring unit, the police had invited Fani-Kayode to appear before it on what it described as “fact finding” over the former minister’s alleged “conspiracy, criminal and inciting publication.”

Fani-Kayode had in his earlier response soon after receiving the police invitation said that he cannot be intimidated or silenced, adding that he was going to consult with his lawyers and take it from there.

The lawyers, who spoke through Kayode Ajulo, in the letter to Idris on behalf of Fani-Kayode said:

“We have our client’s instruction to inform you that he will honour the said invitation and possibly respond to questions on all facts which may be limited to his knowledge.

“However it is essential to unequivocally state that the invitation letter under reference appears vague and ambiguous in its form. Your office for reasons best known to them did not mention the name (s) or person (s) complaining against our client and on what particular subject matter his presence is required.

“Therefore in view of the short notice apparent in your letter under reference, our client is constrained to politely request for a rescheduling of the interview date and also that he be furnished with essential particulars of the purpose of his visit to your office, so as to adequately prepare for the said ‘interview’.”

According to the letter, the request for the extension of time by their client was partly due to his current engagement at the ongoing national conference of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).

Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), remains one of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration top critics.
