Sunshine Stars players stage protest over non payment of salaries, poor welfare

Players of Nigeria Professional League side Sunshine Stars on Friday staged a protest over the non-payment of salaries which has extended to five months.

”Some of us did not go home during the yuletide season because there was no money to celebrate with our family’’ a key member of the team told reporters.

The players started the protest from their camp site and marched to the governor’s office in Akure, Ondo State capital, where they were addressed by the deputy governor, Lasisi Oluboyo.

The deputy governor promised the protesting players that the state government as a matter of urgency will look into the issue and ensure the payment of their salaries in the coming days.

The players had embarked on the same protests last season and the previous one to press home their demands.

The club is one of the running football activities of Ondo State Football Agency, and they have lost several of their top stars to clubs within and outside Nigeria in recent years due to the poor welfare package at the club.

The Owena Whales are currently 16th on the Nigeria Professional Football League log, and will host ABS FC in their next outing on Sunday at the Akure Township Stadium.
