Super Eagles send Cameroon out of World Cup race

The Super Eagles of Nigeria shared points with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon after their FIFA World Cup qualifier ended 1-1 at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé on Monday.

Nigeria were in high spirits heading to the match as coach Gernot Rohr started with the same XI that caged the Lions 4-0 in Uyo last Friday.

A first half goal by Moses Simon put the Eagles ahead when he connected with a Victor Moses delivery after a poor clearance from Cameroon, to blast a fierce shot home.

It was in the 75th minute that Nigeria goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa gave away a penalty to the Cameroonians when he flattered into a player after missing the ball.

The hosts then equalised as substitute Aboubakar converted the spot kick to keep the two teams level.

Cameroon continued to dominate possession towards the end of the game but just couldn’t make anything out of it as the Nigerian backline were well organised.

The game ended one goal from each side, leaving the World Cup ticket still at least a game away from the Super Eagles.

The result also means the Indomitable Lions have crashed out of the race to the World Cup finals in Russia next summer, having obtained only 3 points from four games.

Nigeria, who are now on 10 points and atop the Group B, have thus extended their unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers to 34.

The other teams in the group, Algeria and Zambia will battle again on Tuesday, as Algeria will be looking to revenge their 3-1 defeat to their visitors last weekend.

The matchday 5 contest for the Super Eagles will be against the second-placed Zambia in October, and Nigeria will be hosting.
