Super Eagles win pre-World Cup friendly against Poland

Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off preparation for the 2018 World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Poland in an international friendly in Wroclaw on Friday night.

The victory follows a 4-2 win over three-time world champions, Argentina, in Russia last November– a game that was played after Nigeria qualified for their 6th appearance at the global competition.

Robert Lewandowski had the first chance to score in the 8th minute but his shot hit the post after going past Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.

Odion Ighalo also almost opened the scoring five minutes to half time when he headed Victor Moses’ brilliantly taken freekick slightly off target.

But Poland thought they had gone ahead on 43 minutes when a cross that appeared to have crossed the line was cleared off by a Nigerian defender.

The hosts had many corners in the game but could not convert any of them as the Eagles defence proved a hard nut to crack.

Moses finally put Nigeria ahead on 61 minutes after converting a penalty he earned while trying to beat a Poland defender and was brought down in the penalty area.

Poland sped up the game afterward and nearly equalised on 65 minutes via a freekick, but one of their players headed the cross over the bar after a bounce in the box 18.

The Europeans had many other chances in the second half but the Eagles held on to the lead till the final whistle.

Next on for Nigeria is Serbia in another friendly in London next Tuesday.
