Nigeria’s Super Falcons have crashed out of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after losing 3-1 to Japan in their final group C game on Wednesday.

The Nigerian ladies showed great promises going up against Brazil in their opening game, and also played well against Spain.

They however lost 1-0 to Brazil and 1-0 to world champions Spain, with hopes of bouncing back against Japan to advance in the tournament.

But it was Japan who won the day, with Maika Hamano opening the scoring for the Asians while Mina Tanaka doubled their lead.

Jennifer Echegini scored to halve the deficit and give Nigeria hope but Japan’s Hana Kitagawa restored their two-goal cushion in first half stoppage time with a sublime free kick.

The Falcons needed an outright win to stand a chance of progressing into the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

In the group’s other game, Spain defeated Brazil 2-0 to record their third win in the group.

Spain finished top of group on nine points, Japan placed second on six points, Brazil was third on three points while the Falcons ended bottom with no point.
