EKITI GOV POLL: Plan to disqualify Fayemi fails

The Supreme Court has upheld the victory of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate John Kayode Fayemi at the governorship election staged in Ekiti State following a petition filed against his victory in the July 14, 2018 poll.

During proceedings, the apex court in a unanimous judgment by a five-man panel, on Wednesday held that the appeal by Segun Oni of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) was statute barred.

Justice Amiru Sanusi in the lead judgement also held that the case, being a pre-election one, was not commenced at the trial court, within the required time, as stipulated under the Forth Alteration Act.

Oni, a former governor of Ekiti State had appealed the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which earlier upheld the decision of a Federal High Court, to the effect that his (Oni’s) challenge of Fayemi’s eligibility to contest the last governorship election in the state, was without merit.
