Suspected herdsmen kill 20, injure several in Plateau attack

Tragedy struck Ancha Village in Miango district of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State Friday when suspected herdsmen reportedly killed 20 persons and injured several others in an attack.

The Spokesperson of the Plateau Police Command, ASP Terna Tyopev, confirmed the attack.

Tyopev said, “Yes, we are aware of the attack”.

The suspected herdsmen had reportedly launched the attack on the community in the early hours of Friday, leaving 18 dead at the scene.

The dead includes seven male, five female and six children with over 10 sustaining gunshot wounds, as well as deep machete cuts.

Two of the injured later died at the hospital where they were receiving treatment.

Residents of the community who woke up to the tragedy had since been in mourning.

The special task force commander and the Plateau State Commissioner of Police paid a visit to the community in the aftermath of the attack, commiserated with them, and assured them of security.

Major General Anthony Atolagbe, commander, Operation Safe Haven, during his visit to the community, called on the youths not to take the law into their hands, saying that security operatives had commenced an investigation into the attack.
