Suspected herdsmen strike again in Kogi, kill traditional ruler, wife, 9 others

A traditional ruler, the Onu Agbenema, Musa Edibo, and his wife, as well as no less than nine others were on Monday slaughtered by suspected Fulani herdsmen following separate attacks on Agbenema, Aj’Ichekpa, Opada and Iyade villages, of Kogi State.

The attackers, who were said to have stormed Agbenema in Omala Local Government Area (LGA) of the state with sophisticated weapons hid in the bushes around the villages from where they allegedly launched the attacks, and burnt down several houses.

Eyewitness reports claimed that the killers slit victims’ throats and cut off their vital parts, adding that the administrator of Omala LGA, Ibrahim Aboh, escaped the attackers by the whiskers.

The report added that the houses of former chairman, Adofu Stephen, and that of his parents were burnt, while soldiers drafted in the area allegedly refused to repel the herdsmen.

“We were surprised when we approached the soldiers who were stationed at the Guest House at Abejukolo for assistance.

“They refused to act professionally, as they used their vehicle to block us from advancing to the troubled spot to help our people.

“They have razed down Ojuwo Ajomayeigbi, Iyade, Agbenema and Opada villages. We want the world to come to our assistance before they exterminate and inherit our land,” an eyewitness who would not want to be named said.

At the time of this report, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command claimed that he was yet to be briefed by the DPO in Omala, but assured to make public details of the matter as soon as he confirms the report.

The killing is coming after herdsmen also allegedly killed no less than 30 persons in Kogi State last week.
