Taiwan earthquake: Last of 116 bodies pulled out of rubble

The rescue mission to pull out bodies from the rubble of a high-rise building which collapsed under a 6.4 magnitude earthquake which hit the city of Tainan in Taiwan has officially been declared over.

The remains of the victims of last week’s earthquake have been pulled out and moments after the search stopped, a minute of silence ended the operation with the death toll arising from the earthquake put at 116.

Tainan city Mayor Lai Ching-te bowed deeply and thanked the rescuers for their over one week work, and ordered a minute of silence for the victims.

According to the latest figures from Tainan’s city authorities, a total of 270 people in the building survived, including 95 who were evacuated and 175 who were pulled out from the rubble.

Meanwhile, Lin Ming-hui, the building’s developer and two architects have been detained on suspicion of negligent homicide following accusations that Lin’s company cut corners in the construction of the collapsed 17-storey building.
