Taliban free Canadian tourists detained since 2010

Colin Rutherford a native of Canada has been freed from Taliban militants after the armed group had accused him of being a spy.

Colin had been held since 2010 by the Taliban in Afghanistan and moments after he was set free the Canadian government made an official announcement on the issue while also thanking Qatar for helping to secure Colin’s release.‎

A year after he was captured, the Taliban released a video of Rutherford in 2011 and accused the then 26-year-old of being a spy.

In a statement on Monday, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion maintains that Rutherford was a tourist in Afghanistan when he was seized by the Taliban in November 2010.
