Tanzania, Gambia outlaw child marriage
Child marriage has been banned in both Tanzania and Gambia with tough penalties awaiting offenders in rulings seen as landmark decisions in some quarters.
Yayha Jammeh, the President of Gambia announced that anyone caught marrying a girl below 18 would be jailed for up to 20 years.
The high court in Tanzania also imposed a landmark ruling outlawing marriage under the age of 18 for boys and girls.
According to statistics 30% of underage girls are married in The Gambia, while in Tanzania the rate is 37%.
