Teacher remanded for sexually assaulting nine pupils

Court remands 51-yr-old Polytechnic lecturer for rape, murder of 13-yr-old girl

A 40-year-old lesson teacher, Faruk Adam, has been charged by the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly assaulting nine of his pupils sexually.

Sergeant Peace Chukwudi, prosecutor, told the court on Tuesday that the offences were committed by the defendant between November 2018 and February 2019 at No. 1 Jaiye Balogun Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.

He added that the offences flouted sections 261 and 263 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

On nine counts bordering on alleged sexual assault on nine of his pupils, the prosecutor informed the court that the defendant sexually assaulted a 13-year-old victim, by squeezing her breasts after which he unlawfully inserted his fingers into the private parts of the nine pupils who are between the ages of seven and 13.

Magistrate K. O. Doja-Ojo ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison while his case file duplicated and sent to the DPP office for legal advice till the result comes out before adjourning the case till March 21 for mentioning.

Meanwhile, another trial of a WEMA bank employee, Kazeem Olawuwo, and his colleague was adjourned by the same court on Tuesday. Kazeem 37, and his female friend Risikatu Wahab, 35, were arraigned on 12 counts bordering on conspiracy, fraud and stealing after illegally transferring N2.4m customers’ funds.

Ms T. A. Idowu, the presiding magistrate, who adjourned the case till April 2 told the defendants to get a counsel before the adjourned date after noticing that the defendants did not have a counsel to stand in for them.

According to Sergeant Friday Mameh, the prosecutor, the offences were carried out by the accused between October 2016 and April 2018 at Wema Bank Plc, Orile Iganmu branch, Lagos after which Olawuwo transferred a total of N1.9m to one Kazeem Olarewaju, who is at large, adding that the transfer was issued out on five different occasions.

The prosecutor who added that the offences contravened sections 287 (7), 365 (1) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 disclosed that the second accused, Wahab, also received part of the funds knowing that it was fraudulent.

The defendants, were granted bail with the sum of N1m each after pleading not guilty to the charges.
