Team Delta emerged champions at the just-concluded National Sports Festival after winning 352 medals at the Games held in Abuja.

It was the 19th edition of the biennial multi-sports event, which was originally conceived as a “unifying tool” with the main purpose of promoting peace and cross-cultural affiliation in Nigeria after the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.

The south-southern state successfully defended the title it won at the last edition of the competition in Lagos state six years ago.

They had also won the title at Bauch 2000, Abuja 2004, Gateway 2006, Kada 2009 before the Eko 2012.

At Abuja, Delta won a total of 163 gold, 88 silver and 101 bronze; and were followed by Rivers State, who won 69 gold, 58 silver and 67 bronze.

Team Edo made the third position with 47 gold, 41 silver and 43 bronze, and will be the hosts of the next edition of the Games in 2020.
