Teenager kills 2, injures several others in California school shooting

A tragic scene played out at a California high school when a 16-year old student armed with a gun shot and killed two fellow students and injured several others during a shootout.

Reports said the student pulled out a 0.45 caliber semiautomatic handgun from his backpack and fired on fellow students as classes began on Thursday, killing two and wounding three others, according to authorities.

The student who was celebrating his 16th year birthday then turned the gun on himself but survived the self-inflicted gunshot to the head and was in grave condition, law enforcement officials said.

“How do we come out of tragedy? We need to say ‘No more!’ This is a tragic event. It happens too frequently,” said Captain Robert Lewis of Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s station, striking an emotional note in an otherwise somber news conference.

Investigators were still searching for what drove the unidentified student who acted alone towards the rampage at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, about 65km (40 miles) north of Los Angeles.
