Tension in Edo as Police take over House of Assembly

Edo State House of Assembly Complex

There is palpable tension in Edo State, as the police has taken over the embattled state House of Assembly complex.

Ripples Nigeria gathered that as at 8am Monday morning about 24 patrol vans of the police were stationed at the assembly complex, just as members of the assembly are billed to resume plenary this morning.

It would be recalled that the Edo State House of Assembly was the scene of violence in the last week when the speaker of the House and his deputy were impeached.
The process of the impeachment became violent as thugs were said to have invaded the chambers, causing mayhem in the process.

The heavy presence of the police may not be unconnected with insinuations that the state Governor,  Adams Oshiomhole may have perfected plans to move against his deputy, Dr. Pius Odubu, who was the subject of an alleged assassination plot about two weeks ago.

Odubu, who had been at loggerheads with Oshiomhole, was reportedly attacked in Auchi when he went to address party delegates ahead of the governorship primaries of the APC.

Odubu is an aspirant for the office of governor against the wishes of his principal, Oshiomhole.

In a related development,  the APC continued to record violence as it prepares for its primaries on Sundaywhen suspected armed thugs shot at another APC aspirant, Mr Godwin Obaseki and his supporters at Sobe, Owan West Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, brave youths in the area however pursued the suspected thugs and apprehended them with their guns and they were handed over to the Police.

Confirming the attack, the state Commissioner for Arts and Culture, McDonald Obasuke, said the attack took place at about 5.30pm while Obaseki was preparing to address party delegates.

Speaking on the incident, the aspirant, Obaseki said: “I called off the meeting with the delegates because I had to be whisked off by my security men. No one was hurt though. I cannot be intimidated. Whoever did this has failed because we will continue with our campaign.”

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Osifo,  said he is not aware of the attack, promising to call the Divisional Police Officer at Sabongida Ora for details of what happened.
