The demystification of Fashola

POWER SECTOR: Nigeria guns for N13.5bn loan from France

By Joseph Edgar . . .

I have not seen power for the last two weeks,  the roads are still as bumpy and rough as he met them and there is still no housing. How Fashola has fallen, today he is totally naked. He can’t even come out to give us reasons for his seeming failure that Lai Mohammed has left us with a litany of excuses for Fashola. Excuses that you can’t even tell the fabled Marines.

Fashola was the darling. He performed wonders as Lagos State governor despite his continued but well hidden lack of support for the establishment. He was the darling of the masses and the media and they built him to the point where he was untouchable. Even the powers that be could not touch him as he had achieved immortality simply because of his uncharacteristic performance as the Lagos State helmsman.

However that was then as our man has developed feet of clay. With three huge portfolios welded into one, Fashola has suddenly become a clown. Nothing seems to be working right for him. Power generation has degenerated far below Jonathan’s days and he seems to be overwhelmed. No more action from him but a disturbing silence which can only signal a lost hope.

This appointment to me was an attempt to blunt any presidential ambitions. This to me was a master stroke of the powers that be who could not stand him. They knew precisely well that he would be overwhelmed with the litany of woes ensconced in these sectors. He should not have taken this appointment, it was a poisoned chalice. He should have just gone back to private life while bidding his time for a resurgence.

My fear is that by the time he realizes this, the Fashola brand would have been damaged beyond repairs and once again Nigerians would have lost a bright star. Even Amaechi seems to be doing well in his sector, with the railways and the rest at least we see the pictures.

So let me hold my peace now even as I continue to watch this space. But let me warn, I do not envisage a surge of performance from this tired war horse.
