There is no multiple taxation in Nigeria— Fowler

The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Babatunde Fowler, has said that multiple taxation does not exist in Nigeria.

Fowler made this known while addressing State House correspondents after he briefed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on activities of the FIRS on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said multiple taxation can only exist in a situation where the same tax is paid to different tiers of government.

“I would like to state once again as I have done before, that we do not really have a situation of double or multiple taxation in this country.

“You only have that when you pay the same tax to two tiers of government,” he said.

The FIRS boss, who explained that all payments made to the government are not referred to as taxes, noted that payments which include penalty for offences or usage of government’s properties are user charges.

On the Voluntary Assets Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) of government, Fowler said there has been good response to the initiative.

“The response has been very good. We are collating all the figures both at the federal levels and the states levels and I believe that by the middle of July, we should be able to tell the nation the exact progress in terms of the numbers that have declared, amounts that have been paid and amount that is going to be paid in installment.

“The window expired on June 30 and anyone who has not come forth by now we shall use legal means to make sure that we bring them to book and make sure they pay the appropriate tax, with interest and penalty,” he said.
