Third Mainland Bridge to be closed after Sallah Holidays

The Third Mainland Bridge would be closed down temporarily from midnight of Thursday, August 23 to midnight of Sunday, August 26, the Lagos State Government has said.

The shut down of the bridge for four days was to enable the government conduct “Investigative Maintenance Test” on the bridge.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, made this known in a statement on Sunday.

Last week, the Federal Government declared Tuesday, August 21 and Wednesday, August 22 as public holidays to celebrate Eid-El-Kabir.

With this latest development, commuters would not be able to access the bridge on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government had in July postponed the closure of the bridge due to indiscriminate parking of haulage vehicles on other alternative routes which could have adversely affected traffic.

But according to the statement, Akinsanya said the decision to begin the closure on August 23 was taken after due consultation with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and other stakeholders.

He said the bridge would be closed to enable the contractors to assess the true state of the bridge after which works would commence by the end of the year or early in 2019.

“The Third Mainland Bridge which was opened about 30 years ago by the then military government has had haphazard maintenance and repairs in the past which the present Federal Government is committed to correct by carrying out proper and continuous maintenance and repairs on it,” Akinsanya said.

The state government, therefore, urged all motorists and residents to cooperate with the government by minimizing non-essential travel and movements during the period.

The commissioner noted that all traffic management agencies including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police, among others would be engaged.

He said the effort was to forestall break down of law and order, and to ensure smooth flow of traffic on all the other alternative roads and traffic corridor across the metropolis to ensure free flow of traffic.
