Tinubu calls for peaceful conduct ahead of Edo governorship elections

President Bola Tinubu has urged all stakeholders in the upcoming Edo State governorship elections to act peacefully and sportingly.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized the importance of respecting the democratic process and the will of the people.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, citizens of Edo State will choose a new governor amid a competitive race featuring three key candidates: Asue Ighodalo from the Peoples Democratic Party, Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

Onanuga stated, “The President implores the governorship candidates, political parties, and supporters to respect the democratic process and the people’s will. He believes in the voters’ ability to make informed decisions about their future leaders.”

Tinubu highlighted that democracy flourishes through “civility, tolerance, patience, and respect for the rules of the game.”

He praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its commitment to a fair election and called on all stakeholders to collaborate for a successful and peaceful process.

Additionally, Tinubu commended the candidates and parties for their issue-focused campaigns, which prioritize improving livelihoods and fostering economic growth. He encouraged all citizens to maintain peace and resolve disputes amicably through established channels.

The President expressed “unwavering confidence in the professionalism and integrity of security agencies and INEC officials,” urging them to remain impartial and safeguard the electoral process’s integrity.
