President Bola Tinubu met former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the inauguration of the new Ghanaian leader, John Mahama, in Accra on Tuesday.

The duo shook hands and exchanged pleasantries at the event.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan who is head of the Economic Community of West African Community (ECOWAS) Elders’ Forum also graced the occasion.

Tinubu and Obasanjo have rarely met since the former assumed office in May 2023.

Obasanjo is one of the few critics of the Tinubu administration and recently criticized the government over some of its policies, including the fuel subsidy removal.

He refused to support the former Lagos State governor during preparations for the 2023 general election and instead threw his hat into the ring for the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, as the country’s ideal president.

At the Accra ceremony, Tinubu declared that African leaders are committed to lifting millions of their citizens out of poverty.

He said: “We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We have found the critical path to our success. We shall lift our nations out of poverty and build a resilient economy at our own pace.

“Today, I am here not only as the President of Nigeria but also as an African in resolute support for Ghana and her people.”

The Nigerian leader, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, said Mahama’s inauguration was a source of pride and honour for Ghanaians, Africa, and its Diaspora.

He said Ghana like Nigeria draws inspiration and strength from Kwame Nkrumah and many of its past leaders who not only fought for her independence but also cherished the close relationship between the two nations.

Tinubu expressed confidence that the new government in Ghana would strengthen the powerful bond leading to greater shared prosperity for citizens of the two countries.
