Torres in 'stable condition' after head injury against Deportivo

Spanish side Atletico Madrid have said striker Fernando Torres is stable and conscious in hospital after suffering a head injury on Thursday night in their 1-1 draw with Deportivo.

Torres, who has scored five goals for Atletico this season, crashed heavily to the turf, with his head hitting the ground hard in an 85th-minute aerial challenge with Alex Bergantinos.

Atlético gave an update on Twitter, assuring worried fans that the player was not in critical condition.

“Thanks for the messages of support for @Torres. He’s stable and conscious. He’ll spend the night in hospital and undergo more tests tomorrow,” the club wrote.

The Spain international, 32, would be back on his feet soon, as the scans showed he has “no traumatic alterations or injuries”.

“It was just a scare. I hope to come back very soon,” Torres said.

At the game on Thursday, Atletico finished with 10 men, having used all three substitutes before the injury, but earned a point thanks to Antoine Griezmann’s stunning 30-yard strike earlier in the 68th minute.

In his post-match chat, Atletico coach Diego Simeone said he was “worried and nervous” when the incident happened, just as goal-scorer Griezmann said, “Everybody was speechless in the dressing room because of what happened.”

The draw leaves Atletico fourth in La Liga – 11 adrift of leaders Barcelona – while Deportivo are now 17th.
