Tottenham offers £8million for Moses

English club Tottenham has tabled an eight million pound offer for Super Eagles winger, Victor Moses, who has travelled with the Chelsea FC first team to their training base in Montreal, Canada, ahead of pre-season friendlies in the United States.

The 24-year-old winger spent the last season on loan at Stoke City, where he was amongst the Potters’ better players in a solid campaign for Mark Hughes’ men.

Moses was reportedly reluctant to return to the Britannia Stadium as part of the deal to bring Asmir Begović to Chelsea FC, and an offer from Tottenham could well tempt the Nigerian international.

According to English newspaper The Mirror, bitter London rivals Tottenham Hotspur wants Moses as a replacement for England international Andros Townsend.

The report claims that Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is resigned to losing Townsend, with several Premier League clubs interested in the winger, who wants more regular playing time ahead of the European Championships in 2016.

A deal is thought to be difficult, however, due to the rivalry between the clubs, as also the history of failed negotiations dating back to the summer of 2011 when the Blues tried to sign midfielder Luka Modrić from Tottenham.

The news of Spurs’ interest comes days after Stoke City boss Mark Hughes hinted that Chelsea FC might see Moses as part of their plans for next season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Welshman said: “I think Chelsea have taken a view that they would like to keep him. Of course, they may go into the market again and that might change that idea that they have.

“He did really well for us last year despite some injuries but it looks like Victor could play a part for Chelsea this year.”

In a move that seems to validate the claims made by the Stoke manager, José Mourinho has chosen to take the Nigerian international with him on the Blues’ pre-season tour of the United States, where they are scheduled to take on the New York Red Bulls as well as European power-houses Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

Victor Moses has made close to 50 appearances for the Blues, and could well add to that number the coming season. The 24-year-old, who played on the right wing under interim manager Rafael Benítez during the club’s successful 2012-2013 Europa League campaign, in fact played on the left flank for Stoke City last season, and could act as back-up for Eden Hazard in that position.

The Nigerian’s pace, strength and directness coming off the bench could prove to be useful for Mourinho. Moses is also a home-grown player, and should he be willing to accept a bit-part role in the squad, Chelsea FC are not likely to be averse to keeping him.

The potential signing of Pedro from Barcelona could change that, but even if the Spanish international signs for the Blues, Moses is unlikely to be sold till late in the window when Mourinho has finalised his squad for the defence of the club’s Premier League crown.
