Tragedy as 16 die in boat mishap on trip to view ‘Arabic inscription on stone inside River Niger’

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Tuesday between Rofia and Mauta in Agwata village in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State when 16 people reportedly died in a boat mishap while on a journey to view the rumoured Arabic inscription on a stone inside River Niger.

The incident was said to have occurred when the boat carrying about 50 passengers coming from Zamare in Kebbi State hit a tree and capsized.

It was gathered that 16 bodies were recovered, while two persons were still missing. Others were rescued by local divers in the area.

The Public Relations Officer of Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Hussaini Abdullahi, confirmed the incident, stating that the boat had hit a tree in the river, breaking into two.

Abdullahi added that the agency was in touch with the community to get the accurate number of those involved in the accident.

He also confirmed that the passengers were coming from Kebbi State to see a rumoured Arabic inscription about Holy Prophet Muhammed, on a stone inside the River Niger.
