Tragedy in India as tainted liquor claims 50 lives, 50 others hospitalised

Reports say 50 other victims have been hospitalised after consuming the local brew laced with methyl alcohol which attacks the central nervous system.

According to local police officer Julie Sonowal, the owner of a brew-making unit and four others have been arrested and are awaiting prompt prosecution.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a similar one occurred in the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand when more than 100 people died after drinking tainted alcohol.
