Trial for disgraced former South Korean President begins

The trial of disgraced and ousted South Korean President Park Geun-hye who has been accused of corruption has commenced.

Park is standing trial after being accused of colluding with her friend Choi Soon-sil to force major South Korean companies like Samsung to pay huge bribes in millions of dollars in order to get favours from the government.

Park’s secretive and allegedly corrupt relationship with Choi, along with wider revelations about the cozy ties between South Korea’s political and economic elites, sparked mass protests, ending in Park’s impeachment last December.

Police had escorted Park, in handcuffs, into court for her first public appearance since she was jailed last month over the corruption allegations.

Park who is the first leader to be ousted from office accepted responsibility for the events that culminated in the Constitutional Court upholding a parliamentary impeachment vote over an influence-peddling scandal that has shaken the political and business elite in South Korea.
