In what is seen in some quarters as a move which may spark civil strife, Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has surprisingly rejected the outcome of the last presidential election citing serious anomalies while also calling on the country’s electoral body to stage new polls.

The comments by the country’s incumbent has now placed the political future of the West African country in doubt especially after Jammeh days ago, publicly conceded defeat to opposition leader Adama Barrow.

While speaking on national TV, Jammeh said he has changed his position concerning the outcome of the election results.

“After a thorough investigation, I have decided to reject the outcome of the recent election. I lament serious and unacceptable abnormalities which have reportedly transpired during the electoral process.

“I recommend fresh and transparent elections which will be officiated by a god-fearing and independent electoral commission,” he said.
