Trouble looms in DRC as election loser asks court to cancel poll result

There is palpable tension in the Democratic Republic of Congo after election loser Martin Fayulu appealed to the country’s Constitutional Court to cancel the provisional result of the just concluded presidential election.

Fayulu’s appeal against the result of last month’s election came after he claimed he won with 62 percent of the votes cast.

“The request seeks the annulment of the result declaring Felix Tshisekedi president,” his lawyer Feli Ekombe told reporters outside the court on Saturday.

According to members Fayulu camp, their candidate in fact thrashed the official winner with more than 60 percent of votes.

“When you know you are in the right, you are not allowed to remain home,” Fayulu said, urging supporters to “rise up”.

Meanwhile, the Southern African Development Community on Friday called for calm in the DRC amid a dispute over the result of presidential vote.
