Trump defends son after email of Russian contact surfaces

US President Donald Trump has come in for the defence of his son after an email emerged suggesting Trump Jr. was eager to meet with a Russian government lawyer who might have damaging information about Democratic White House rival, Hillary Clinton.

Trump said his son is innocent, after initially releasing a statement on Tuesday calling his son “high-quality”.

The President of the US also condemned investigations and media coverage of Russia’s involvement in the last US elections.

“He was open, transparent and innocent. This is the greatest Witch Hunt in political history. Sad!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The released email is regarded as the most concrete evidence yet that Trump campaign officials welcomed Russian help to win the election, a subject that has cast a cloud over Trump’s presidency and spurred investigations by the Justice Department and Congress.

It also pointed to the fact that the younger Trump was open to receiving a “very high level and sensitive information” from a Russian attorney that a go-between described as “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump” ahead of a meeting on June 9, 2016.
