Trump makes U-turn on separation of migrant families

After a deluge of criticism, US President Donald Trump has decided to sign an executive order ending child separation but says that ‘zero-tolerance’ prosecution policy will continue.

Reports say that the order which would keep families together after they get detained crossing the border illegally was drafted by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in an effort to end what has become a major crisis for the Trump administration.

“We’re going to have very strong borders but we are going to keep families together,” the president said, adding that he doesn’t like seeing children separated from their families.

The executive order was signed hours after the state of New York made moves to sue Trump for separating no less than 2,000 kids from their parents at the US-Mexico border following a highly criticised “zero tolerance” immigration policy.

The lawsuit was announced by Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, a long-time opponent of Donald Trump.
