Trump signs new travel ban, excludes Iraq

Controversial US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order on revised travel ban targeted at six mainly Muslim dominated countries except Iraq.

The dictates of the revised travel ban states that people from six Muslim-majority nations who are seeking new visas are temporarily halted from entry into the U.S even as it also suspends the country’s refugee program.

According to reports, the new directive aims to address legal issues with the original order, which caused confusion at airports, sparked protests around the country and was ultimately blocked by federal courts.

The order makes clear that lawful permanent residents (otherwise known as green card holders) are excluded from any travel ban, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said on “Fox and Friends” Monday. Also those with validly issued visas will also be exempt from the ban.

“If you have travel docs, if you actually have a visa, if you are a legal permanent resident, you are not covered under this particular executive action,” Conway said. “Also, Iraq is no longer on the list based on their enhanced screening and reporting measures.”

Initially, Trump received knocks from governments from London and Berlin to Jakarta and Tehran who spoke out against his initial order to put a four-month hold on allowing refugees into the United States and temporarily ban travellers from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries.
