Trump taps Elon Musk to lead new Dept of Govt Efficiency
US President-elect Donald Trump, on Tuesday, appointed Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, to co-lead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency. Musk, alongside former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, will aim to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash regulations, and cut wasteful expenditures.
Trump stated, “Musk and Ramaswamy will pave the way for my Administration to… provide advice and guidance from outside of government.” The department will operate outside traditional government confines, allowing Musk to remain at the helm of Tesla, X, and SpaceX.
Musk promised transparency, saying, “All actions of the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online… We will also have a leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars.”

Equities analyst Daniel Ives praised the move, saying, “Musk will have a massive role in the Trump White House… The major benefits for Musk and Tesla far outweigh any negatives.”
However, Public Citizen’s Lisa Gilbert criticized the appointment, stating, “Musk knows nothing about government efficiency and regulation… This is the ultimate corporate corruption.”
The Department of Government Efficiency aims to conclude its work by July 4, 2026, and its acronym, DOGE, references the cryptocurrency dogecoin, which Musk promotes.
