Once Upon A Tuface!

“Nigerians!!! Due to security concerns and public safety consideration. I hereby announce the cancellation of the planned March” -Tuface

That was how musician Innocent Idibia announced the cancellation of a planned nationwide protest against bad governance which had been scheduled to hold on Sunday.

The artiste popularly referred to as Tuface took to his Instagram handle to make the announcement.

After the musician announced plans to hold the protest, and went further to release a schedule of the event, he has been under pressure, especially from security agencies, namely the police to drop the idea.

The police had expressed fears over the protests being hijacked by miscreants for selfish reasons to commit crime, and disturb the peace.

But Tuface was initially adamant, and even moved the date forward by one day, to coincide with the return of President Muhammadu Buhari to Nigeria from his overseas vacation.

The Benue state-born artist, however, in the video announcing the cancellation of the march, said that it had become clear that the protest tagged ‘One voice Nigeria’, was under threat of being hijacked by interests not aligned with his ideals.

Already mixed reactions have started trailing the cancellation of the protests.

Already mixed reactions have started trailing the cancellation of the protests.

In one of such reactions, His Eminence, Archbishop Samson Benjamin commended the artiste for the move which he said was the right thing to do.

He stated that Tuface had good intentions with the planned protest, which was to draw government’s attention to the sufferings of the people, especially the poor masses, but that other interests had poised, ready to hijack it from him to further their selfish interests.

He said, “2face idibia loves Nigeria but now knowing that the intent of the protest has been hijacked, it was only wise to call it off, therefore anybody calling for any protest is on his own”.

The cleric also noted that the security agencies had seen all these before now, hence their bid earlier to prevail on him to shelf the protest.

Watching the video, it became evident that tuface was under duress and was forced to talk by some forces we don’t know. The security reasons he mentioned were not for the protest, but for his life and his family members, we have to read in between the lines. He was forced to make a u-turn. But, his voice, our voices have been heard.

Many guns are probably pointed behind him while he made that video. No one begins what he cannot finish, without some forces behind it. But the symbolic thing I like about @2babaofficial chickening-out is that people will now learn to appreciate what activists do…no just mouth!

At least, the federal government of Nigeria felt threatened by the planned protest before its cancellation. This shows the masses have the power to put this useless government into check, but we were not aware until the protest came up. With our without tuface, the march should hold, we need better government, we need a government that will put its people first, we need a government that will fight for its people and not personal pocket. If we can march, speak in one voice, this government will know Nigerians are not fools. Enough is enough!

To Tuface – My friend, where were people like you who suddenly found their voice, when the country was being run down. You did not have regular electricity for 16 years, you never protested, Boko Haram was bombing around the country including in our seat of power in Abuja, you never protested. Private schools took over from public schools and parents were paying through their nose to send their kids to school, you never protested. Our roads turned into death traps with many losing their lives, you never protested. Our hospital turned into consulting clinics. You did not protest. A National Security adviser disbursed $2.1 billions, money meant for our military, resulting in the death of so many of our soldier because of lack of adequate equipment, you never protested. Now a man who is very sincere about his mission, sincere about his fight on corruption and who is barely two years in power. And who is trying to manage a totally broken system, a lowest oil price and a production of crude that fell by 40% below in production because of sabotage from some Avengers that are sponsored by those who lost election. Your agenda is well known my brother. You are not protesting for Nigerians, you are protesting the privileges you lost. The free money. The free cars, The weddings in Dubai, your conspicuous insatiable appetite for foreign luxury that you never worked for.
No, we will not allow you to let your selfishness set our country back. We gave Buhari the mandate to clean up our society and set it on the path to civility. That is the mandate until 2019. And if you think you dont want him and you want him removed. Go campaign to remove him by 2019.
Let the old man focus on his mission.
