Turkey accusses Trump of turning a blind eye to Khashoggi's murder

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said that US President Donald Trump is turning a blind eye to the gruesome murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Cavusoglu added that Trump’s latest comments about the killing of Khashoggi show that he will “turn a blind eye” to the issue regardless of what investigators uncover.

Criticising Trump for prioritising commercial relations than justice, Cavusoglu said that human life should take precedence.

“This statement that Trump made also means: ‘No matter what happens, I will turn a blind eye.’ This is not a correct approach. Not everything is money,” Cavusoglu told broadcaster CNN Turk on Friday.

Cavusoglu’s comments are coming days after US politicians especially Democrats and Republicans accused Donald Trump of foot-dragging over the imposition of sanctions on Saudi Arabia in connection with the murder of Khashoggi.

According to the politicians, Trump is putting “Saudi Arabia first” in his decision to not take punitive measures against the kingdom or Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over Khashoggi’s murder.

Trump’s decision is “yet another fawning prostration to a foreign authoritarian”, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine tweeted on Tuesday.
