Turkey, Palestine, others push to seek UN rejection of Jerusalem as new capital of Israel

The decision to recognise occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is hotly being contested by Turkey, Palestine and other countries with Ankara said to be concentrating efforts on passing a resolution at the UN General Assembly against the decision.

Ankara’s push is coming as the UN Security Council is expected to vote on Monday on a draft resolution rejecting the establishment of diplomatic missions in Jerusalem.

Turkey, Palestine and other parties are expected to try to push the issue to the UN General Assembly, where all 193 members of the international organisation are represented.

President Donald Trump declared Washington’s new stance on December 6, saying at the time that the US would be moving its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, protests against Trump’s decision continue to rage across on across the world with mass rallies held on Sunday in Indonesia, Turkey and Pakistan in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians.

The biggest demonstration took place in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, where an estimated 80,000 protesters rallied outside the US embassy.

There were similar scenes in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, where protesters raised Turkish and Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as “Jerusalem is ours and will remain so”.
