Turkey rejects US appeal to release pastor

A Turkish high court based in Izmir has rejected an appeal made by the United States of America to release jailed pastor Andrew Brunson.

The court ruled that Brunson who has been at the centre of a dispute between Ankara and Washington after he was held on espionage and terror-related charges, will stay under house arrest.

The move by the court upheld a decision taken by a lower court earlier this week, even as Brunson’s lawyer says he would appeal the ruling.

However, the US has threatened to deal more sanctions on Turkey over the continued detention of Brunson.

That much information was revealed by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin while addressing a cabinet meeting on Thursday when he said that the next spiral of tit-for-tat sanctions was coming soon, deepening a spat that has rattled financial markets, if Brunson is not released by Turkey.
