Turkey's President Erdogan attacks EU, backs death penalty

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared that allegations against Qatar placed before it by Saudi Arabia and its other allies are unfair while also warning that provocation in the Gulf region should be avoided.

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday after the G20 meeting in Hamburg, Erdogan criticised the sanctions against Qatar stressing that the countries involved in the standoff should work towards a reasonable solution of the conflict.

In a related development, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson arrived in Qatar’s capital in an effort to mediate in the Gulf crisis.

He was met late on Saturday by Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at Al Bahr palace in Doha.

Among other topics, the two discussed the Gulf crisis as well as ways to enhance counter-terrorism cooperation between Qatar and the UK, according to Qatar’s state news agency.
