Two dead as opposition protest turns deadly in Kenya
Protests by opposition party members in Kenya over the country’s electoral body turned bloody as two demonstrators were killed in the city of Kisumu when police opened fire.
Reports say opposition supporters blocked key roads and set fire to tyres in a “Day of Rage” protests aimed at overhauling the country’s election commission.
There has been a constant staging of weekly protests every Monday by the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) alliance, which alleges that the electoral body is biased towards the president.
Protests took place in several towns but in Kisumu, an opposition stronghold in western Kenya, as police opened fire before using tear gas and water cannon to quell the protests.
