U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles coach Aigbogun rues South Africa defeat

Coach of the Flying Eagles of Nigeria, Paul Aigbogun has expressed his disappointment over his side’s defeat to South Africa on Saturday.

The Eagles ended their campaign at the 2019 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Niamey with a 5-3 penalty shoot-out defeat to the Amajita.

However, Nigeria succeeded in securing a spot in the U-20 FIFA World Cup which will hold later this year in Poland by reaching the semifinals in Niger.

Speaking after their failure to win the competition’s bronze medal, Aigbogun regrets that his team’s outing ended with a defeat.

The match was goalless after regulation time, and in the penalty shootout, Nigeria’s first kick by Ibrahim Alhassan was missed while the Amajita converted all of theirs.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t score during the ninety minutes and it goes to penalties like the semi-final and it’s anybody’s game, and unfortunately, we lost,” Aigbogun told reporters as cited by CSN.

“I don’t think you can train penalties well. Our first penalty taker lost and he has been taking all our penalties.”

The final of the Niger tournament will take place today (Sunday) between Senegal and Mali.
