U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles off to a good start with win over Burundi

Flying Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a 2-0 win over Burundi on Saturday.

The game, played at the Stade Seyni Kountche in Niger Republic, was the second clash in Group A, as Niger were earlier held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa.

Paul Aigbogun’s boys failed to register a goal in the first half despite a dominant display, but successfully went for the win in the second half.

Nafizu Yahaya finished off a fine cross with a timely header in the 55th minute to put the Flying Eagles ahead, substitute Effiom Maxwell sealed the victory on 70 minutes.

As it stands, Nigeria top the group with three points, while Niger and South Africa have one point each.

Burundi occupy last position with zero point.

The Flying Eagles will face South Africa in their next game on Tuesday.
