U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles stop Burundi, battle Sudan

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles brightened their chances of qualifying for next year’s U20 AFCON final tournament in Zambia by defeating Burundi 2-1 on Saturday at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar thereby zooming into the final stage on a 3-1 aggregate.

The Flying Eagles team had earlier won the first leg 1-0 in Burundi and will now face Sudan in the qualifying final playoff next month.

After a goalless first half, dazzling winger Samuel Chukwueze was fouled by the Burundians in the penalty box as top striker Victor Osimhen scored in the 73rd minutes to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead.

Eight minutes later, enterprising captain Kelechi Nwakali made it 2-0 with a superb free kick from 23 yards.

Ndikumana Magloire however scored a consolation goal for Burundi in the 89th minutes while capitalizing on a defensive blunder by the Nigerian defenders.

The Flying Eagles will battle Sudan on July 8 in the final qualifying stage.
