UCL: Man City knocked out, Monaco, Atletico go through to Q/finals

English Premier League side Manchester City were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League on away goals after losing 3-1 in their round of 16 second leg tie against Monaco at Stade Louis II on Wednesday night.

Leading 5-3 from the first leg, City started poorly in the first 45 minutes as Monaco dominated, and opened the scoring through Kylian Mbappe’s finish from close range from Bernardo Silva’s cross eight minutes into the game.

The home side doubled their advantage even before half time via Fabinho’s well-taken strike from inside the area on the half-hour mark.

In 71 minutes, Leroy Sane scored and brought the English side back into the contest, and they were 13 minutes away from progressing, before the hosts hit back through Tiemoue Bakayoko’s free header to bring the aggregate to a 6-6 close.

“We played exceptional in second half but we forgot to do that in the first. We wanted to defend aggressively. We were better in the second but it wasn’t enough,” City Boss Pep Guardiola said after the defeat.

With Man City out, Premier League champions Leicester City are now the only English team in the last eight.

In the other round of 16 tie of the night, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid drew goalless with their opponents, Bayer Leverkusen, but advanced to the quarter finals having won 4-2 in the first leg.

The result maintains Atletico’s flawless record of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals under manager Diego Simeone, making it four in a row since 2013-14.

As it stands, these are the teams in the last eight of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League:

Atletico Madrid
Barcelona
Bayern Munich
Borussia Dortmund
Juventus
Leicester City
Monaco
Real Madrid

And the draw to ascertain the quarter-final fixtures among the teams will take place on Friday.
