UCL: Barca secure first-leg win against Man Utd; Juve held to draw at Ajax

Barcelona secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

A spirited United failed to score at home, and must produce another Champions League comeback like they did in the previous round to keep their hopes alive.

Barca were no where near their best but secured the win after Luis Suarez’s far post header from Lionel Messi’s cross deflected in off Luke Shaw in the 12th minute.

The goal was confirmed by the video assistant referee (VAR) after initially being given offside.

As it stands, Shaw’s own goal gives Barcelona the advantage ahead of the second leg in Camp Nou on April 16.

In the other tie at Netherlands, Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed an away goal for Juventus, who were later held to a 1-1 draw by Ajax.

The Portuguese, who has won the competition five times, put Juve ahead just before half time, but an early second-half goal by David Neres levelled for the hosts.

The goal was Ronaldo’s 125th goal in the competition, and it came from a diving header following Joao Cancelo’s cross.

Both teams had late chances, but neither side could grab a winner.

They meet in the second leg in Turin on Tuesday, April 16.
