UCL: Madrid recover from early goal, thump Napoli 3-1

Spanish giants Real Madrid came from a goal down to beat Italian side Napoli in the first leg of their Uefa Champions League last-16 tie at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

The visitors took the lead after Keylor Navas was caught off guard by a superb Lorenzo Insigne strike inside eight minutes, before Karim Benzema headed the equaliser from Dani Carvajal’s cross 10 minutes later.

The home team won the game with a 3-1 scoreline after Toni Kroos put them ahead early in the second half plus a stunning volley from Casemiro in the 54th minute which sealed the win.

Napoli have been eliminated on each of the previous four occasions they have lost the first leg of a last-16 tie in European competition. However, reacting after the match, Napoli Boss Maurizio Sarri is hoping to break the ill record, as they hope to change things at home.

“In the second leg we’ll try to overturn the situation. We need no mistakes and to create more chances. I still believe we can make it. I’m confident,” Maurizio said.

“I’ve told my players not to give up and the same counts for me. We need to be stronger than ever.”

Napoli will host the second leg on 7 March, with a place in the quarter-finals of the competition at stake.
