Defending champions, Real Madrid suffered their biggest ever home defeat in Europe as they were thrashed 3-0 by CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Although they had topped the group G with 12 points, they still fielded most of their first team players and were handed a defeat that records as their first at home in nine years.

Fedor Chalov curled home CSKA’s opener in the 37th minute, before Georgi Schennikov volleyed in a second just before halftime.

Arnor Sigurdsson then completed the convincing win with a strike from the edge of the box on 73 minutes, as the Russians ensured they won home and away against Real.

CSKA however went out of Europe after Viktoria Plzen beat Roma 2-1 to finish third and clinch a Europa League place.

In Group H, Juventus were stunned 2-1 by Young Boys while the other group game between Valencia and Manchester United ended 2-1 in favour of the Spanish side.

Juve, who were playing to seal top spot in the group, trailed by two goals until the 80th minute in Switzerland when substitute Paulo Dybala halved the deficit from a Cristiano Ronaldo assist.

Manchester United could have leaped to top spot if they had won in Spain, but the defeat to Valencia kept them in second place, and Valencia third.

In Ukraine, Shakhtar Donetsk missed the chance to reach the knockout stages of the Champions league after they were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Olympique Lyon.

Lyon therefore sealed the second position in Group F, to join winners Manchester City, who defeated Hoffenheim 2-1, in the round of 16.

In Group E, Bayern Munich played a 3-3 draw at Ajax, with both teams already qualified for the knockout stages.

Benfica then ensured that AEK Athens lost all six matches in the group stages of this season’s Champions League.

The Portuguese club won the game 1-0 and will participate in the Europa League after finishing third on the group.
