Uganda confirms 3rd Ebola case in 2019

The Ugandan health ministry has confirmed a new Ebola case (the third in 2019) in the country’s western town of Kasese.

A nine-year old girl who had travelled from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was found to have a fever during screening for Ebola at the Mpondwe border crossing into Uganda.

Reports say her blood sample was later sent for testing where it was confirmed on Thursday evening that she had contracted Ebola.

The nine-year old was then isolated and transferred to an Ebola treatment unit for proper treatment and care.

In June, there were two Ebola cases in the country.

A Ugandan man and his Congolese wife lost two sons after their return from a trip to DR Congo to see relatives.

Uganda has been able to maintain largely successful screening centres along its border with DR Congo in an effort to keep out an outbreak that has killed close to 2,000 people in neigbouring countries.
